Ethnic Diversity. Perceptions and Attitudes Among the Pre-adolescents of Modena

This is an article published in the magazine “Polis” 2002, edited by the Cattaneo Institute of Bologna and edited by the Mulino. Starting from the results of the research that show that pre-adolescence assumes a significant importance in the formation and stabilization of attitudes towards ethnic-cultural diversity, the results of a survey conducted on a sample of 431 pre-adolescents from two lower middle schools are described. state of the city of Modena. In general, the pre-adolescents of the sample show in their perception of diversity that they use criteria that could be explained by the importance assumed, in the pre-adolescent period, by the sense of group belonging. In particular, there is a certain sensitivity towards stereotypes linked to the phenomenon of non-EU immigration in all its aspects. In this process, the strategies developed by them to cope with the “development tasks” that prepare them for future entry into adult life seem to play an important role, in particular those aimed at opening up to the social context and gender differentiation linked to pubertal stage. This link also seems to be confirmed by the analysis of the trends that suggest a differentiation in the type of orientation of attitudes towards diversity according to gender. In particular, there is a greater tendency of males to assume attitudes towards diversity of more negative orientation. In particular, there is a greater tendency of males to assume attitudes towards diversity of more negative orientation. in particular those aimed at opening up to the social context and gender differentiation linked to the pubertal phase. This link also seems to be confirmed by the analysis of the trends that suggest a differentiation in the type of orientation of attitudes towards diversity according to gender. In particular, there is a greater tendency of males to assume attitudes towards diversity of more negative orientation. in particular those aimed at opening up to the social context and gender differentiation linked to the pubertal phase. This link also seems to be confirmed by the analysis of the trends that suggest a differentiation in the type of orientation of attitudes towards diversity according to gender. In particular, there is a greater tendency of males to assume attitudes towards diversity of more negative orientation.
